Valērijs on sour cream
Buenos Aires, Argentina
Don’t you miss something from Latvia? Food, for example…
Oh my goodness, of course I do. A milanesa just isn’t the same as our karbonāde (Latvian pork cutlet). A milanesa is kind of tough, breaded and fried, but it doesn’t taste quite like the traditional Latvian ones, which are dipped in egg and flour before frying. Sometimes I really crave a cutlet, or meatball soup! Pickled cucumbers I don’t miss. We’ve learned how to make sour cream ourselves. You buy cream cheese or Greek yogurt, squeeze in a little lemon with some salt, mix it, and you get about 97 percent of the taste of real sour cream.
