The Torte Was Rolling Down the Road (Rasma Barbee)

Rasma remembers how her mother baked 15–20 cakes and tortes every year for the town fair in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, where the family represented the Latvian booth. Together with her mother and sister, Rasma stood in traditional Latvian folk costumes, talked about Latvia, and introduced visitors to Latvian foods. In the small town, it was considered so unique that they even appeared in the newspaper a few times, since many people had never heard of Latvia before.
